Pather Panchali won Best Human Document at Cannes 1956; Aparajito won the Golden Lion at Venice 1957; Ashani Sanket won the Golden Bear at Berlin 1974; 32 National Film Awards; Academy Honorary Award 1992.

Widely considered India's greatest filmmaker. The Apu Trilogy and everything after put Bengali cinema on the world map and remains the benchmark it's measured against.
