Uttam Kumar was born Arun Kumar Chattopadhyay on 3 September 1926 in north Calcutta, and died at fifty-three in July 1980. For roughly three decades he was not a star of Bengali cinema so much as its centre of gravity. The Uttam–Suchitra partnership alone carried a whole popular tradition.
All 182 of his catalogued films, oldest first. He won the National Award for Best Actor once, as the category’s first-ever recipient. The “five National Awards” often quoted counts four given to films he produced.
