Feluda on Screen: Every Film and Series in Order
From Sonar Kella in 1974 to Nayan Rahasya in 2024, with every Feluda, Topshe and Jatayu along the way.
The Feluda films in order begin with Satyajit Ray's Sonar Kella (1974) and Joi Baba Felunath (1979), and continue through Sandip Ray's films from Bombaiyer Bombete (2003) to Nayan Rahasya (2024). Alongside them run a set of 1990s TV films, a Hindi TV series and three web series, and this list puts all of them in order with the actors who played Feluda, Topshe and Jatayu.
Feluda, the private investigator Prodosh Chandra Mitter, first appeared in Feludar Goyendagiri, which Satyajit Ray published in three instalments in the children's magazine Sandesh between December 1965 and February 1966. Topshe, his cousin, narrates the stories. Jatayu, the thriller writer Lalmohan Ganguly, joins from Sonar Kella onwards. Each story stands on its own, which makes the screen history easy to enter at any point.
The Satyajit Ray films
Sonar Kella (1974). Directed by Satyajit Ray, released on 27 December 1974. Soumitra Chatterjee as Feluda, Siddhartha Chatterjee as Topshe, Santosh Dutta as Jatayu. A schoolboy, Mukul, who claims to remember a past life, two crooks who want the treasure he describes, and a journey to Rajasthan to find the golden fortress of his memories. It won five National Film Awards, including best direction. If you watch one Feluda film, watch this one.
Joi Baba Felunath (1979). Directed by Satyajit Ray, with the same three actors. Feluda, Topshe and Jatayu spend the Durga Puja holiday in Benares, where a golden Ganesh goes missing from a Bengali family's house. The year is often given as 1978 because it won the award for best children's film at the 26th National Film Awards, which honoured films of 1978, but it was released in cinemas on 5 January 1979.
The TV years
Kissa Kathmandu Ka (1986 to 1987). A Hindi adaptation of Jato Kando Kathmandute for Doordarshan's Satyajit Ray Presents. Shashi Kapoor as Feluda, Alankar Joshi as Topshe, Mohan Agashe as Jatayu (renamed Lalmohan Garg), and Utpal Dutt as the villain Maganlal Meghraj. Satyajit Ray wrote it; sources differ on whether he or Sandip Ray directed it.
In 1992 two Feluda stories were adapted for Bengali television by Bibhash Chakraborty, with Soumitra Chatterjee returning as Feluda. We have been able to confirm these only from a single source, so we give no further detail.
Feluda 30 (1996 to 1997). Sandip Ray's first Feluda work, a set of five TV films made for DD Bangla with Sabyasachi Chakrabarty as Feluda and Saswata Chatterjee as Topshe. Baksho Rahashya came first, with Rabi Ghosh as Jatayu; it later had a cinema showing and a home video release in 2001, which is why some lists call it a 2001 film. The others were Gosainpur Sargaram, Sheyal Debota Rahasya, Bosepukure Khunkharapi and Jato Kando Kathmandute, in which Anup Kumar played Jatayu. Rabi Ghosh died in February 1997.
Satyajiter Goppo (1998 to 1999). Four more TV films by Sandip Ray for DD Bangla: Jahangirer Swarnamudra, Ghurghutiyar Ghotona, Golapi Mukta Rahasya and Ambar Sen Antordhan Rahasya. Sabyasachi Chakrabarty and Saswata Chatterjee again, and Bibhu Bhattacharya as Jatayu for the first time.
Dr. Munshir Diary (2000). A further Sandip Ray TV film with Sabyasachi Chakrabarty and Saswata Chatterjee.
The Sandip Ray films
Bombaiyer Bombete (2003). Released on 12 December 2003. Sabyasachi Chakrabarty as Feluda, Parambrata Chatterjee as Topshe, Bibhu Bhattacharya as Jatayu. Feluda's return to cinemas after twenty-four years: Jatayu goes to Bombay to watch his novel being filmed, and Feluda is drawn into a smuggling plot.
Kailashey Kelenkari (2007). Released on 21 December 2007. The same three.
Tintorettor Jishu (2008). Released on 12 December 2008. The same three.
Gorosthaney Sabdhan (2010). Released on 10 December 2010. Saheb Bhattacharya takes over as Topshe, with Sabyasachi Chakrabarty and Bibhu Bhattacharya.
Royal Bengal Rahasya (2011). Released on 23 December 2011. Bibhu Bhattacharya's last Jatayu: he died on 23 September 2011, the day after he finished dubbing the film.
Badshahi Angti (2014). Released on 19 December 2014. Abir Chatterjee as Feluda and Sourav Das as Topshe. There is no Jatayu, because the story comes from before he joined the series. It was planned as the start of a new run with Abir Chatterjee, which was dropped in 2016.
Double Feluda (2016). Released on 16 December 2016. Two stories, Samaddarer Chabi and Golokdham Rahasya, with Sabyasachi Chakrabarty in his last outing as Feluda and Saheb Bhattacharya as Topshe. Again no Jatayu: Sandip Ray said he could not find anyone to replace Bibhu Bhattacharya.
Hatyapuri (2022). Released on 23 December 2022. A new cast: Indraneil Sengupta as Feluda, Ayush Das as Topshe and Abhijit Guha as Jatayu. A run of murders in the seaside town of Puri.
Nayan Rahasya (2024). Released on 10 May 2024, with the same three actors. It is the most recent Feluda film.
The web series
Feluda (2017 to 2018). A web series on the Bioscope app, directed by Parambrata Chatterjee, who also played Feluda, with Riddhi Sen as Topshe.
Feluda Pherot: Chhinnamastar Abhishap (2020). Directed by Srijit Mukherji for Addatimes, released on 26 December 2020. Tota Roy Chowdhury as Feluda, Kalpan Mitra as Topshe, Anirban Chakrabarti as Jatayu. A second story for the same service, Jawto Kando Kathmandute, was postponed and later announced for October 2025; we could not confirm that it was released.
Feludar Goyendagiri: Darjeeling Jawmjawmaat (2022). The same director and cast, now on hoichoi, from 17 June 2022, in six episodes.
Shabash Feluda: Gangtokey Gondogol (2023). Directed by Arindam Sil for ZEE5, released on 5 May 2023, in ten episodes. Parambrata Chattopadhyay as Feluda and Rwitobroto Mukherjee as Topshe, with no Jatayu.
Feludar Goyendagiri: Bhuswargo Bhayankar (2024). The second hoichoi season, set in Kashmir, again with Tota Roy Chowdhury, Kalpan Mitra and Anirban Chakrabarti. Srijit Mukherji has described it as his last Feluda adaptation.
Reading order and watching order
The books and the films do not run in the same order, and it does not matter much. Ray wrote the stories over more than two decades, and apart from Jatayu's first appearance in Sonar Kella and a few running jokes, very little carries over from one to the next. Sandip Ray has filmed them out of sequence throughout, and the web series choose stories freely.
So watch in release order if you want to see the cast change around a fixed character, and in any order at all if you only want a good mystery. The one piece of advice worth following is to see Sonar Kella before the others. It is where Jatayu enters, it is the film against which every later Feluda is measured, and it is also the best of them.
Is there a new Feluda film?
Not as of September 2026. The most recent film is Nayan Rahasya, in May 2024, and the most recent series is Bhuswargo Bhayankar, also in 2024. Joto Kando Kolkatatei (2025), directed by Anik Dutta, has sometimes been described as Feluda-like, but it is not a Feluda adaptation.
Where to watch
The films are spread across several services and the listings change often, so each film's page on Cholochitro Diary carries dated streaming links rather than a fixed list here. The web series live where they were made: Feluda Pherot on Addatimes, Feludar Goyendagiri on hoichoi, Shabash Feluda on ZEE5.
If Feluda leads you to the other great Bengali detective, our guide to Byomkesh Bakshi on screen, in order, does the same for him.
